August 25th, 2011 is set for a night of Rock n’ Roll, Indie Rock, Folk Rock, and Garage-Soul at
the Wild Buffalo House of Music!

In celebration of BuildStrong’s own Austin Santiago’s 27th birthday the Music Group proudly
present these three rockin’ bands:

Keaton Collective – based out of Bellingham the band consists of Chad Fox, Adam Taniguchi,
JD Uhls, Ricky Penalba, William Jennings, Alex Jones, Rey Corpuz, Lexie Corley, and Bryn
Lumsden. Influenced by Dischord Records, Townes van Zandt, Led Zeppelin, BSS, Wu Tang,
TP & the Heartbreakers, and Communism their music sure rocks with an indie/punk tone to it.

Check out Keaton Collective’s music at: http://www.myspace.com/keatoncollective

The Reflectacles – based out of Los Angeles and formed in 2009 the band consists of Logan
Metz, Lincoln Mendell, Gerry Hirschfeld, Devin McCartey, Chris Bullard, and AJ Novak. They
composed award winning film soundtrack for indie film “Turn Me On Dead Man” and they have
opened for Willie Nelson, Kris Kristofferson, and Leon Russell. Their music has been featured
on radio stations in LA, Texas, Maui, as well as Sirius Radio, and their debut release, “The
Wiley Post EP” (2010), was mixed and produced by Grammy Award-winning producer Eric “E.
T.” Thorngren. According to themselves on their website, they are “crusading to return some
level of smarts and sophistication to mainstream music.” Imagine the Beatles playing folk
inspired music at an old Western Saloon and you have a combo not to be missed.

Check out the Reflectacles music at: http://www.myspace.com/thereflectacles

Pickwick – based out of Seattle and formed in 2008 the band consists of Galen Disston,
Matthew Emmett, Cassady Lillstrom, Garrett Parker, Michael Parker, Kory Kruckenberg. They

mixing old 60’s soul and modern indie rock. Influenced by music from the Stax and Motown
labels combined with the influence of Sam Cooke, Spoon, Smokey Robinson, The Walkmen,
Spencer Davis Group; Pickwick’s makes up for an organic and unique garage-soul sound.

August 4th, 2011 means Rock, Blues, and Sexy Soul!

The Stone Foxes & Hot Bodies In Motion play live at the Wild Buffalo House of
Music – Presented by none other than yours truly: BuildStrong Music Group

Hot Bodies In Motion from Seattle, WA, will be first out on stage this evening with some
catchy soulful indie blues rock tunes.

As quoted on their website, www.hotbodiesinmotion.com, “Baby-makin’ mammal funk, laced
with old-school blues roots—Hot Bodies acknowledges the dangers in putting this much sexy
into one sound. The melodies are soulful and catchy enough to put that iconic smile on Stevie
Wonder’s face while the music would make Stevie Ray Vaughan tip his hat.”

Ben Carson (vocals, guitar), Scott Johnson (lead guitar, backup vocals), Zach Fleury (bass,
backup vocals) and Tim LoPresto (drums) formed “Hot Bodies In Motion” late 2009. Early
2011 they released their debut album “Old Habits” and it’s not for nothing that their fan base is
growing at every show.

With more sexy soul and a rougher man voice than Maroon 5 does it, they are sure to deliver a
show all bodies will be hot after.

The Stone Foxes from San Francisco, CA, will finish the night with some rocking blues soul.

On their YouTube channel, http://www.youtube.com/user/thestonefoxes#p/, freelance feature
writer Bradford Schmidt is quoted, “they never sound like they’re trying to be anything but
exactly who they are. But then they don’t need to: their style of blues-rock stands on its own.”

Aaron Mort, and brothers’ Spence Koehler (guitarist) and Shannon Koehler (drummer)
formed “The Stone Foxes” late 2005 together with former band member Avi Vinocur (guitarist
and bassist). They released their first album “The Stone Foxes” in 2008, and their second and
most recent one “Bears and Bulls” in 2010. Early 2011 they opened for “Cage The Elephant”
and Grammy winners “The Black Keys” at Mesa Amphitheatre in Phoenix, AZ. Their music has
also been featured in a national Jack Daniel’s ad and a couple of TV shows.

With a dirty guitar sound and some howling blues the night will certainly rock away.

— Check out their music on the link provided above. Then go buy your presale ticket for $5
at http://holdmyticket.com/event/26814 and get your rocking blues and sexy soul on! See you
there!

Earth Day Japan Benefit Show to Feature the Local Musical Talents of Keaton Collective, Wishbone, Cara Alboucq, and an All star Jam.

Friday, April 22nd, 2010 (Earth Day) The Wild Buffalo will host a Japan benefit show to raise money for the Red Cross and the tsunami relief effort. Japan has faced one of the most devastating disasters in history and through the power of music and community we hope to bring people together to help do our part in this sad time. There will be a $10 suggested donation at the door, all of which is going directly to the Red Cross. Musical acts will consist of local indie rock group Keaton Collective, electro DJ duo Wishbone, singer/songwriter Cara Alboucq, & an All star jam made up of many local musicians.

Keaton Collective has been a staple on the Northwest music scene with their unique brand of Indie Americana. Now two albums and one EP deep, Keaton Collective show no signs of stopping and are aiming to release more records, play more shows, and go on more tours. An exciting band definitely not to be missed!

Wishbone consists of a pair of DJs (Booger & Boombox Kid) perhaps best known for their “VS.” parties. Their high energy mixes and exciting live shows provide for a dance party that will leave your feet moving and your body grooving all night long!

Cara Alboucq wrote her first song as a sophomore at Western Washington University. she has opened for diverse bills including Little Dragon, Macklemore, & Eldridge Gravy. Since then she has collaborated with several local talents such as Keaton Collective and Christal Taylor and released a solo EP. Cara’s tunes are introspective, acoustic folk influenced and her way of connecting with her audience provides for a captivating musical experience!

The All star jam is being put together by Craig Jewell and will feature tons of local talent. They have earned their strips with consistently creating a packed and sweaty dance party every time they do a Free Friday Funk Jam. The music is usually a mix of fun improved funk jams and a few hand selected covers that always seem to hit the spot.

Fences and Beat Connection Take Bellingham by Way of Wild Buffalo

Thursday, April 14th the two bands will perform in what promises to be a must-see Bellingham show brought on by none other than Buildstrong Music Group

Tuesday, April 11th, 2010 indie rock band Fences will be performing an early show at the Wild Buffalo with Beat Connection.  Massachusetts native, Christopher Mansfield Mansfield on guitar and vocals, Sean on the drums, Johnathon on the electric guitar and keys, and lastly Terry playing bass guitar and keys. In early 2010 to release a self-titled LP that made the SPIN Magazine year-end list of “albums you may have missed” in 2010.  With Fences being the latest project by Mansfield signed with Onto Entertainment and having collaborated with artists such as Tegan and Sara along with Seattle MC Macklemore and Ryan Lewis, it seems Fences is coming into its own with the release of their debut album self-titled Fences. In late 2010/early 2011, Fences toured in several cities across the US with Against Me!. They’re looking forward to their headlining tour along the west coast. Not falling short off that tour was 2010’s Bumbershoot. Make sure to catch them while they’re in Bellingham!

Seattle’s own Beat Connection composes feel good indie electronic sound that sounds somewhat premature-experimentation that has gone terribly right. The composition of Jordan Koplowitz , Reed Juenger , vocalist Tom Eddy, Mark Hunter and Jarred Katz results in that of which is Northwest grown. Their 2011 EP Surf Noir features impressive variety in range of songs such as the melodic, yet soothing vibe of Sunburn to the mash-up range of In the Water, which hints a little style of MGMT. Their music has reached across Europe as well as the west coast from San Diego to San Francisco, Beat Connection has been touring representing Seattle proudly. It would be hard to tell you not to see them, so I won’t. Check them out for yourselves this Thursday for an early show at 8pm at the Wild Buffalo with $5 per ticket presale. – Jasmine / BuildStrong Music Group

The Wild Orchid Children played at the Wild Buffalo in Bellingham on Jan. 22, 2010.

The Seattle band has a unique sound.

“Every so often a band comes along that challenges the status quo, turning its back on the obvious influences that fuel 95% of the indie rock market and spinning its tunes from a different deck. The kind of band that inspires imitations rather than produces them, that challenges our monotonous diet of soft rock wannabes and Coldplay clones,” said Dan Coxon of CultureMob.com. “Wild Orchid Children might just be that band.”

Well, we brought the band to Bellingham and they brought a projector to mix up the visual aspect of the show.

Make.Shift is transforming an historic auto body shop into an all-ages arts and music hub, which will host all-ages concerts, affordable band practice space, a local art gallery, resource library and more. We’re partnering with WHAAM (Whatcom All-Ages Arts and Music) to make it happen!

The Mission
We’re a 501c3 nonprofit organization that supports independent musicians through environmentally friendly programs.

The Projects
$5,000 of our fundraising goal is earmarked for the renovation of our new space. Your tax-deductible contribution will also help maintain two current projects:

The Power Wheel bicycle generators, which are used to power live music in the pacific northwest, and to raise community awareness of sustainable energy alternatives.

The Magic Van, a biodiesel SWAT van we use to transport independent musicians on concert tours throughout the pacific northwest. This program helps make touring more affordable for musicians by reducing the cost of gas. By using biodiesel, we also help lighten the environmental impact of touring.

In 1972, a thriving Seattle soul music scene was on the verge of national recognition. In 1975, almost suddenly, the scene died and was quickly forgotten by the changing city. In 2001, after the chance discovery of a 45-record, a local DJ uncovers a rich past hidden in plain view.

Narrated by Sir Mix-A-Lot. Features interviews with musicians from the time as well as commentary with Quincy Jones, Mark Arm (Mudhoney), Ben Shepherd (Soundgarden), Ben Gibbard (Postal Service/Death Cab for Cutie).

My mom Tina Jones is a HUGE Clinton fan and hit me up multiple times about how sad she was that she wasn’t going to be able to make the show. being as Teens had flown out to the west coast multiple times to see Clinton perform I know she wasn’t kidding around. In an attempt to make her feel at least a little bit better about missing the show I filmed a couple songs, got a shout out to TIna from Clinton, and got an autographed copy of his new album.

Gotta love summer in the Pacific Northwest. Even though it was overcast the day of the SkimMusicFest there was still plenty of people checking out the  skim and music. Here is the video recap of the SkimMusicFest featuring music from Seattle band Head Like a Kite.

The contest took place on Whidbey Island at Double Bluff. SkimMusicFest is part of the Northwest Skim Tour we proudly sponsored.

Whidbey Island, located 30 miles north of Seattle in the Puget Sound is accessible by the Deception Pass Bridge on the north side of the island via SR 20. It can be reached by ferry as well through the Keystone/Port Townsend and Clinton/Mukilteo routes. This competition will take place at Double Bluff Park located on the southwest side of the island along Useless Bay. The beach here is sandy, flat, and produces tidal pools at low tide that are desirable for skimboarding.

<strong>Location:</strong> Double Bluff Park.
<strong>Time:</strong> Reg @ 9AM / Comp @ 11 AM
<strong>Entry (only competitors):</strong> $25 Amateur / $35 Pro

<a href=”http://skimboardculture.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/1976doublebluff.jpg”><img title=”1976doublebluff” border=”0″  src=”http://skimboardculture.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/1976doublebluff.jpg” alt=”1976doublebluff” width=”550″ height=”683″ /></a>

On the island there is a relatively large population of riders, most of which have yet to experience a skimboard competition locally at their home beach. This is an opportunity for skimboarders from all over to come compete, have a good time, and discover a new spot to ride that is full of friendly stoked out locals.

We shot video of this event took last August in White Rock, British Columbia. BC skimboarder Kyle Lynch and crew organized the event and built all of the rails.

Riders came from all over the North America to participate in Canadian Open: SkimJam in White Rock, BC. Amos Barlett traveled all the way from Louisiana for the contest. The contest was epic with with a 20-foot kink rail and a 20-foot up flat ollie on.

Issac Thomas won the best overall rider and won the pink palace rail, closely followed by Tim Ladner and Blake Zimmerman.

Roberto Gonzalez-Milroy destroyed the a large chunk of PVC pipe and won the flatland section.

Emile Panerio won the hellbound rail section of the contest.

Kyle Lynch won the the ollie-on rail.

Skimmer Jordan Bennett won the Amateur category.

Part of the And1 team came to Bellingham for part of the 2010 Native American Streetball tour. The local team probably could of had a chance if fouls were called, but this is street ball (in a gym). BellingJAM events are intended to be all inclusive, community-oriented events that synthesize the arts, music and sports cultures that are so integral in the greater community of Bellingham.

On behalf of the entire BellingJAM planning committee, a huge thanks goes out to our supporting sponsors, the City of Bellingham for their support and all of the riders and volunteers who have been ready and willing to help us from the beginning with the Winter BellingJam.

In lieu of the of the original event the BellingJam Haiti Relief Benefit took place on Febuary 15, 2010 featuring drinks, food, art and music at the Copper Hog and a candle-light procession down State Street to the Wild Buffalo in observance of the crisis in Haiti. The night was capped off by Common Market at The Wild Buffalo. All profits from the evening and the BellingJAM’s event efforts will be donated to Yele Haiti’s Relief fund.
Check out the photos from the benefit by clicking here and stay tuned for future BellingJAM events! Thanks again for all of your support; we’re very proud to be a part of this wonderful community!

Make.Shift Project put on a great event, “the Pedal Power: a Bicycle Generator Workshop”, for the local Bellingham community to show people how to build a bike generator. Each workshop participant received written building instructions to take home.

04

Licensed electricians from Mac&Mac Electric instructed participants how to build a bike-powered generator that can power anything from basic household appliances to a live concert. Mac&Mac electricians built a bike generator similar to Make.Shift’s current “Power Wheel” bike generator. These Power Wheels are used by Make.Shift to power live shows indoors and outdoors in Bellingham.

09

All proceeds went to benefit Make.Shift, a Bellingham-based 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to helping struggling musicians while lessening their impact on the environment. The American Museum of Radio and Electricity offers a variety of dynamic science education classes, workshops and events through their SPARK (Science Powered Adventures for Real Kids) program. This video is of Mad Rad performing “Superdope” in Bellingham Washington at The Wild Buffalo House of Music on Dec. 11 2009.

Quote by Nikki of SSG
“I couldn’t complete the top 5 2009 list of hip-hop without including Mad Rad. This has been the band that only grew stronger with opposition. The more trouble they got into in the top half of the year, the more people were paying attention. Things quickly calmed down as far as their infamous ruckus was concerned, but Seattleites were far from finished with Mad Rad.

Mad Rad’s show at Sasquatch 2009 was one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen. P Smoov came out with his arms flexed, smiling, as if he were on top of the world. They roused the crowd to dance and scream their overheated heads off. Buffalo Madona, in his never-ending attempts to outdo his own tom-foolery, climbed on top of the freaking Yeti stage roof. He had to have been at least 75 feet in the air. “He’s going to kill himself!” someone in the audience screamed. Buffalo Madona singing “Quest Que Cest,” was pretty freaking epic. He stood atop of the Yeti stage, lurching, looking into the crowd with an avid warning on his lips as he sang, “We are sheep among wolves. All flesh is grass today. Be weary where you lay. Be strategic where you stray. This warning is for you. You can not look away. You see I leave a trail of blood. I’m talking to your DNA… Run away, run away, RUN away, RUN AWAY…” It was legendary.

Mad Rad also created the hip-hop community’s showcase GO Machine. I could go on and on about Mad Rad’s triumph over 2009, but I’ll just leave it at: They killed it.”BUFFALO

When it comes to music, Seattle is best known for its rock exports. But this weekend’s Go! Machine shows at The Crocodile could be the tipping point that reshapes the city’s musical landscape. The two-night affair, which begins tonight and continues Saturday, features just about every local hip-hopper who made a splash in 2009 and it and has the potential to ignite an already explosive hip-hop scene filled with diverse styles, talents, and sounds.

That’s right, in case you haven’t been paying attention, Seattle has a hip-hop scene and it had a breakthrough year. In fact, hip hop took the spotlight away from the boring bearded folk that reigned supreme before it and shifted the musical focus to party-popping beats and high-energy rhymes performed with passion and flair. If you’ve seen a set by any of the current wave of Seattle hip-hop acts that are a part of Go! Machine you know that it’s that very same passion, flair and showmanship that sells the music.

gomachine

At the center of this mini-festival is the Out For Stardom gang. Between its viral marketing of Go! Machine, landing spots at local festivals and participating in events like last summer’s Beard Off, Out For Stardom has made itself known while doing something the bearded rockers before them didn’t seem to do at the pinnacle of their popularity: They are having fun. The groups Fresh Espresso and Mad Rad are the parties responsible for Out For Stardom (both are performing Go! Machine sets) and each quickly evolved from rising star status to unavoidable epicenter of the scene this year.

Packing a cache full of party raps, Mad Rad could be considered Seattle’s equivalent to the bratty version of the Beastie Boys. How bratty are they? The group got banned from several Capitol Hill clubs in January after allegedly getting into a tussle with a bouncer. (The group was later found not guilty of assault charges filed against them stemming from the incident and the ban has been lifted). The brief ban from The Hill didn’t stop Mad Rad from making a name for itself as the foursome delivered one of the most memorable Sasquatch! performances ever this year and landed itself on the cover of The Seattle Weekly, which is a tough thing for a musical act to do nowadays. The group’s set Saturday closes down Go! Machine so look forward to plenty of musical debauchery.

Equally as popular and on the other end of the rhyming spectrum is Fresh Espresso. While Mad Rad have the bad-boy image, Fresh Espresso is the exact opposite. Rik Rude and P Smoov (who is also a member of Mad Rad) come across as sophisticated players sharing tales of their glamorous lifestyles. That approach, combined with some very slick production, earned Fresh Espresso heavy airplay on KEXP and lots of critical acclaim. You can expect the group to grace many local critics’ “best-of” lists in the coming weeks (including yours truly).

They Live!
Very few live hip-hop acts, local or national, can match the energy of a They Live! Performance. After their Capitol Hill Block Party set earlier this year I wrote, “Be warned Seattle, your next rap superstars are here and they are They Live!” The duo of Gatsby (who is also a member of Cancer Rising) and Bruce Illest demand your attention while they prowl the stage, rapping, breakdancing and hyping the crowd while spitting rhymes about meth heads, killer weed and robotic aliens.

Grynch
This Ballard MC stepped up his rap game this year with the release of his Chemistry EP, on which he stopped rapping about rapping and began writing rhymes about his relatable life experiences. He had a small hit on his hands this summer with “My Volvo” and its home run of a hook which is now a classic in the lexicon of local hip hop.

VS.
VS. is the duo of rapper Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis. Macklemore has been a local critical darling since he dropped his debut “The Language of My World” in 2005. Lewis uses samples from rock groups like Red Hot Chili Peppers, Beirut, The Bravery, and others to bring new life to Macklemore’s poignant and intelligent rhymes which helped make VS. one of the better hip-hop efforts this year.

The Physics
Laid-back vibes dominate High Society, The Physics’ latest EP which was released for free earlier this year. The three MCs make music that’s as perfect for lounging on a lazy Sunday as it is blasting at a summer barbecue.

Champagne Champagne
Headlining tonight’s Go! Machine is the combo of Pearl Dragon and Thomas Gray. The duo will definitely keep the smooth feel of the party flowing with tracks like “Molly Ringwald” and “Soda Poprocks.”

The show last night will remain in my memory for many years to come.

15

The Crowd, The Artists, The Vibe, everything was absolutely BUMPIN.

31

Since I first heard that Ryan Lewis and Macklemore were working on the VS. EP “Vocalist Macklemore and producer Ryan Lewis have come together to create The VS. EP

14

A concept album sampling artists, such as Beirut, The Killers, The Arcade Fire, Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more. The album will be available for free download with a suggested donation beginning 12/15/09.

I couldn’t wait to hear the final product. After a little finagling I acquired an advance copy from Ryan and it has been on heavy rotation since. I was lucky enough to book them for the Bellingham EP Release party at
The Wild Buffalo. Mad Rad rocked a set before Macklemore and as usual they brought energy beyond what seems humanly possible. I question if Buffalo Madonna is not at least half alien.

Mad Rad’s live show is only matched by their work ethic and high quality music. P Smoov, Radjaw, Darwin, and Buffalo Madonna learn about them. These guys are definitely OutForStardom.

Crowd surfing, fans on stage, and performers in the crowd really blurred the line between performer and crowd and create a vibe that was truly dope.

The show was captured by the consistently beautiful snaps and time lapses of Matt McDonald

Along with Matt we also had Jeremy Dubbs and Nick Ennon of the Funner / WildCard production/film crews in the house who will be releasing some HD video footage of last night in the near future. If you didn’t make it out, well, at least you now know what not to miss out on the next time it happen.

How the Northwest Was One is the story of a bunch of snow bandits, filmer bounty hunters, epic gun battles, and riding off into the sunset in a blaze of glory. Not to mention double backflips and corks, the sickest tree jibs, trips to Chile, and deepest powder around. Does snowboarding get any more entertaining than this? Starring: Kurt Jenson, Nick Ennen, Patrick McCarthy, Joe Bosler, Andy Stern, Andy Bergin-Sperry, Tim Carlson, Scott Witsil, Lucas Debari, Shaun McKay, Manuel Diaz, and more

If you missed the Oct. 9th premiere in Bellingham you are just going to have to purchase the movie, but here are some pictures from the premiere. Our photographer shot a time lapse of the night with crowd footage and Project Lionheart. Make sure to check back soon for the video.
